A Guilty Conscience and Compromise

The Holy Spirit is always there to show us when something is wrong. If we have sinned, or if we are about to sin, we feel guilt. That guilty conscience is given by God to lead us to repent and to do the right thing. However, sometimes we reject the Holy Spirit's warning, and we compromise to try to make ourselves feel less guilt.

Solomon felt guilty about his pagan wife staying in David's palace. (II Chronicles 8:11) Solomon moved his wife, Pharaoh's daughter, from the city of David to the new palace he had built for her. He said, "My wife must not live in King David's palace, for the Ark of the Lord has been there, and it is holy ground." He felt the guilt, but He compromised.

When we feel the guilt from God's Spirit, we must stop and seek the Lord. We must ask the Spirit to show us exactly what is wrong. Then, we must confess our sin to the Lord, so He can cleanse us from that sin. Even if we are about to sin, and we feel guilt from God, we must stop and listen to the Spirit, so we refrain from committing the sin.

If we fail to heed the warning of guilt, we will compromise what we know to be right, like Solomon did. We will attempt to cover our sin by our actions or words. That never works. We end up with more and more sin in our life like Solomon did. Compromise leads to destruction. We must avoid it, at all costs.
