The Power of Words

There is no doubt words are powerful. They can be used for good or evil, but they always have an effect on the person who hears them. God means for us to use our words wisely, to build up others and not to tear them down. There is too much terrible talk today, and there is a great lack of loving talk. We need to hear what Solomon said about this and put it into action. (Proverbs 15:23)  If we do that, it could change our personal world and go a long way toward changing the culture in which we live.

When we have a congenial conversation, it brings us pleasure. Congenial simply means to be friendly and considerate. It means carrying on a nice, civil conversation with another person, even if we do not know them personally. Saturday afternoon, I needed some gas and pulled up to a gas pump. A very congenial African-American man was on the other side of the same pump. He initiated a congenial conversation with me. It was a very pleasant surprise. We continued to talk until we had pumped our gas. That talk really brightened my day, just to know that another person would go out of his way to speak kind words to me.  We can do the same thing for many people we meet all of the time.

When we speak the right word at the right time, it is beautiful. Words paint a picture, create a mood. When we think about how to respond, and we say just the right word, it creates a masterpiece. That moment and those words will be remembered, not just heard and forgotten. I know a few people who go out of their way to speak fresh, exciting words, instead of using the same stale words over and over. It is always a great thing to run into those people and hear the beauty of their words. I know I really appreciate it when God gives me just the right words at the right time. It ties a bow on the conversation and makes it special. I hope we will all seek to make friendly conversations, using just the right words. What a difference that will make.
