Why by Yourself?

Moses was a very humble man. He did not become proud because God chose him to lead the Israelites out of Egypt. He was not trained as a leader, either. He had been a shepherd in the wilderness for 40 years when God called him to go back to Egypt. Perhaps those two things indicate why he decided to take a huge personal role in judging the people in their disputes all day long every day. However, when his father-in-law, Jethro, came with his wife and sons, he saw what Moses was doing. He asked him a great question, "Why are you doing all this and all by yourself, letting everyone line up before you from morning to night?" (Exodus 18:13,14) Then, he went on to share his wisdom on how to do it better. We all need to examine our lives to see if we have this same tendency, so we can correct it, if we do.

Most of us were raised to be independent and responsible. Many of us like the praise we get for doing things ourselves, too. Others simply want to serve, and they have a hard time saying no. We want to be good leaders, but we were not born with the natural instincts of how to lead, and we have not been taught. When this is the case, we find ourselves overloading our schedules with things we are doing all by ourselves. We get burned out, and those who are waiting for us to help them get tired of waiting, too. The solution is to enlist and train others to do most of what we do based on the specific things that God has called us and equipped us to do. Therefore, let's all make a list of all of the things we do. Then, examine the list, asking ourselves, "Is this something that someone else would be better gifted or better suited to do?" As God brings people to mind, let's pray about it, and then follow God's direction to enlist them and train them well. Once we delegate the right things from our lives, we will be much more fruitful in the things God wants us to do.
