No other gods

God spoke to Moses on Mount Sinai. He gave Moses the Ten Commandments for Israel and for all people. The ten things that God spoke and wrote on the stone tablets are the basis for understanding God's priorities for every person in the world. That is why it is so tragic that our secular culture in America has restricted people in schools and government places form having access to these words from God. The first four commands have to do with having a right relationship with God, while the last six explain how to have right relationships with people. The first command is definitely based on who God is, and it explains how we are to put Him first, with no other gods in our life. (Exodus 20:1-3) We probably know this command, but how are we doing at obeying it?

God is the greatest possible being in the universe. When we realize this is the reality of who God is, we know that there are no other gods that compare to Him. He is in a class by Himself. Once we see this, we can understand that we need to trust Him and worship Him, so that He becomes "our God." That means He is the greatest possible being in our life. He wants to bring us out of slavery to any sin or any other bondage, as He brought Israel out of Egyptian bondage. Therefore, based on those facts and definitions, we must not ever have any other gods, only God. However, even believers fall into the trap of letting other people or things become as important to us as God. It is at that point that we have elevated something else to be a false god in our life and God is no longer the Only One we worship and follow. That is a terrible condition for any believer. It causes us to have great conflict in our hearts and lives, as the false gods take away our time with God and our total devotion to Him, so that we are out of fellowship with the Creator and Redeemer. When we break this commandment, we must quickly confess our sin, be cleansed, and start having Only God, with no other gods in our life. I pray we will all know Him and worship Him alone all of the time.
