A Guilty Conscience

We all know what it is like to have a guilty conscience. Once we know we have done wrong, there is just something inside of us that keeps reminding us of what we did. This is especially true for believers, since we have the Holy Spirit to convict us of our sins. Joseph's brothers had a very bad case of having a guilty conscience over selling him into slavery. Even after 20 years, when they went down to Egypt to get grain during the terrible famine, they felt like their treatment of Joseph was bringing hardship on them. (Genesis 42:21) It is so important for us to get free from this guilt that plagues us, or we will be in bondage all our lives.

God makes sure that we pay for our sins. He doesn't want us to be comfortable in them. He wants us to have our guilty conscience washed clean, so we can have peace in our hearts with no guilt at all. The first step is to know Jesus as our Lord and Savior. When we do that, He lifts the burden of our sins from our shoulders, and the guilt is gone. However, we still sin after we come to know Him, and our sins will cause us to feel guilt and to remember those sins over and over. This will be true until we sincerely confess our sins and repent of them. Then, the Lord will wash them all away, so we are free of guilt. (I John 1:9) This is true even though Jesus forgives all of our sins when we are saved. He wants us to live for Him and grow in Him, so we have to get rid of our sins between us and Him. I pray that we all will quit living with a guilty conscience. Jesus can and will cleanse it, as we go to Him. Then, we do not have to suffer in this way any more.
