Our Washing and Renewal

Many people in the world do not understand God's means of salvation. The vast majority think that we will be right with God based on our own works of righteousness or good works. However, the Bible is very clear that God's plan of salvation is not based on works that we do, but it is all about His mercy. We can't do anything to forgive our own sins, so the only way for us to be right with God is for God to have mercy on us. He did that when He sent Jesus to die and rise again to pay for our sins. Then, when we trust Jesus as our Lord and Savior, He saves us through the washing of regeneration and the renewal of the Holy Spirit. (Titus 3:5) What a glorious miracle!

The only way that any of us can be saved is by God doing a work in our lives. Yes, He is looking at our hearts to see us surrender to Him in repentance and to trust Jesus as Lord and Savior, but those things are not works. They are changes in our heart that we can make. Anyone can turn from his or her sins, and anyone can choose to put their trust in Jesus. Then, when God sees our change of heart, He reaches down by His mercy and saves us by washing our sins away. He does this by regeneration. He makes us a new person. We are born again, and the old person is gone with all of our sins, and we are made new. (John 3:3; II Corinthians 5:17) We are given the righteousness of Jesus and all of this happens by the renewing power of the Holy Spirit. None of it is anything we can do for ourselves. Therefore, as we can all see, salvation is a merciful miracle worked in us when we humbly submit to God and He makes us new.
