Keys to Happiness in Life

The psalmist gave us a picture of a happy man leading a happy life. (Psalm 128:1,3) Yes, I know that joy is much better than happiness, as I have said many times. However, happiness is important, too. I would define happiness as having a positive experience by how things are going in our life. We could be happy because we get to spend time with someone we love. We could go on a trip and have great experiences which cause us happiness. There are all kinds of ways that things work together to bring real happiness. However, what is beneath those things, and how can we have the kind of happiness that God wants us to have? That is what I want us to explore today, as we see what God said in this psalm.

The fear of the Lord is a key to happiness. When we love Him and have a healthy respect and awe of the Lord, so that we do His will that is fearing the Lord. The fear of the Lord leads to another key to happiness which is walking in His ways. God showed us His ways in His Word, because He wants us to have a happy life, not a sad one. Then, when we fear Him and walk in His ways, we can bear fruit in our life. Fruit is seeing positive results of our words and actions which help others and bring about God's will. It might be seeing people come to know the Lord. It could be living in the fruit of the Spirit, so we have more love, joy, peace, kindness, etc. When we are fruitful and we see our family members doing the same thing, it brings us happiness. I know not everyone gets married, but we can all be a good influence on those around us and bear fruit in some way. I know these things lead to a happy life, because I have experienced what the psalmist said here. I pray that each of us will know the Lord's happiness, plus the joy of the Lord through the hard times. That is the abundant life Christ wants for all of us.
