The Best Refuge for Us

What do we do when we face all types of problems? Some people find a good book written on how to solve those problems and follow the author's advice.  Others find a friend or acquaintance and ask for advice. What happens when we face enemies who are out to harm us? Some people fight back and try to harm them. Others seek help from people or those in authority. However, I do not believe any of these ways of solving our difficulties is our best refuge. I believe what the psalmist said. (Psalm 118:8,9) Let's see just what he had to say.

If we put our trust in people, we will be disappointed many times. That is why people are not our best refuge. It is simply not wise to expect that people will have the real answers to life's problems. Also, it is not wise to trust in the people in authority to do the right thing or to lead us in the right way. It is great when they do, but to depend on it happening every time is not wise. The best refuge for any person is the Lord. Remember, a refuge is a safe place in a time of trouble. A refuge is a shelter where we can escape our enemies. Since the Lord is a Person, not just a place, He can help us in so many ways. He will show us the solutions to our problems, and He will give us the wisdom and power to defeat our enemies. He may use other people or those in authority to help us, but we still run to Him first. However, as the psalmist said so well, we have to take refuge in Him and trust in Him, not in ourselves, not in other people, and not in those in authority. He is the One who can and will help us every time, if we will trust in His solution.

I pray we will all ask ourselves, "Where do I run when I have a problem or when I get attacked by an enemy?" If the clear answer is not to the Lord, we need to change our thinking and decide to trust Him first every time.
