Afflictions can be Good for Us
I would imagine that most of us would like to avoid afflictions. We do not like the pain and discomfort they bring. However, afflictions can be good for us. In fact, they can be very good for us in our relationship with the Lord. The psalmist realized this. (Psalm 119:77) Let's allow God's words to speak to our hearts on this important subject.
It is so vital that we know God's Word and learn to live by it on a consistent basis. Psalm 119 was written to show us the blessings that come from delighting in God's laws and learning His statutes for our lives. As we read this lengthy psalm, we read that living a righteous life also brings afflictions. Others attack us. They lie about us. They want to prove us wrong, so they do not have to follow God's laws. Those afflictions can be good, if we will allow them to drive us to the Lord and to His Word. It is when we are doing well, and we think we can handle life on our own that we neglect to learn the statutes of God. Then, when afflictions come, and we know we can't do it ourselves, we know we need God's wisdom and guidance. Therefore, the afflictions are good, as the psalmist said, because they help us learn God's laws.
The next time you face an affliction, don't get upset. Go to God's Word. See what He says to do, and do it. Then, you will grow in the Lord and enjoy life more abundantly than ever before.

Tomorrow, I intend to read Psalm 119:89-176.
