When the Foundations are Destroyed
David lived in a very challenging time. Under king Saul the foundations of morality had been shaken. The country was not following the Lord as it should have been, because of their unfaithful leaders. It was a depressing time, especially when Saul and his sons were killed in one day by the Philistines. However, then David ascended to the throne. He restored the justice and righteousness that had been lacking. However, he did pose a question for us to consider. (Psalm 11:3) I believe it is very relevant for us today, because believers are in a similar situation.
"When the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do?" (Psalm 11:3) We can take this question in two ways. We can see it as a dire situation with no solution. We might think that the righteous are powerless to rebuild the foundations. I believe that is the opposite of why David posed the question. Remember, David is the young man who killed the giant, Goliath, with a sling and a stone. He was very confident that the righteous could rebuild the foundations of society and of the faith. He believed that because he knew that God was in heaven and His foundations of His holy temple were very secure. Through faith in Him and with His power anything is possible. Therefore, we, as believers, should not be wringing our hands, but we should be praying in faith and following the instructions of the Lord to rebuild the foundations of our culture and our churches. God is able! The question is, "Will we do our part?" I pray that we will.
Tomorrow, I intend to read Psalms 12-14.
