Sow the Wind, Reap the Whirlwind

There is a principle that applies to the nature of sin. It always happens when we choose to depart from the Lord and His ways. People state the principle in different ways, but all of them mean that sin has far more drastic results than we expect to receive when we decide to do the wrong thing. Hosea said, "For they sow the wind, and they reap the whirlwind."  (Hosea 8:7) That is a great word picture that he applied to Israel, but it always applies to our sins.

Wind can be anything from a gentle breeze to a tornado. When we sin, we have the thought that the results will be limited to a small storm in our lives. It could create some problems, but nothing we can't handle. Therefore, we do it. Then, in return we experience a destructive tornado, a whirlwind. Our lives are forever changed by the consequences of our sin. Things are blown away like the heads of wheat in a tornado. They will never be restored. God will make sure that the consequences are more devastating than the pleasure we get from the sin, because He knows that sin leads to death, and He does not want us to die in sin. Also, He wants us to draw near to Him, and we can't do that when we sin. Therefore, next time we are tempted to sow the wind, we need to stop and ask ourselves, "Am I willing to reap the whirlwind?" It is never a good exchange.

Tomorrow, I intend to read Hosea 9-12.
