A Proud Heart
It is very common for us to be overtaken by pride after accomplishing a goal or another meaningful achievement. However, we must be very careful not to let pride remain in our hearts. It will lead us to do foolish things. That is what happened after King Amaziah of Judah defeated the army of Edom. The victory gave him a proud heart, and so he challenged Jehoash, King of Israel to fight him. Jehoash tried to warn him, but pride kept him from listening, so he was badly defeated and Judah suffered from his pride.(II Kings 14:10) We need to apply this truth in our lives.
Pride causes us to think more highly of ourselves than we should. It can cause us to stop trusting the Lord who gives us all of our abilities and gifts. Then, we start trusting our flesh, and our flesh will always fail us at some point. We must stop pride before it settles in our hearts by asking God daily to cleanse us from all pride. Then, we need to confess to the Lord that without Him we can do nothing. Then, we need to do only what the Spirit leads us to do. That will help us stay away from pride and enjoy God's blessings, instead of the painful results of a proud heart.
Tomorrow, I intend to read II Kings 16-18.
