The Destructive Power of Greed

I know there are different definitions for greed. Some people only recognize excessive greed as being harmful. However, the Bible makes it clear that greed takes away the life of the person who has it. (Proverbs 1:19) Therefore, we should consider what Solomon was inspired to tell us about being greedy here in Proverbs.

When we are greedy for gain, we are not just working to make money to provide for our family and others. We are obsessed with making money and using money to gain more and more things. It can be subtle, but if it is there, our focus is on money and material things instead of on the things of the Lord. Therefore, the greed takes away our life, because life is found in the Lord. God does not bless us when He comes in second to making money.

When we are greedy, so that we pile up money and possessions, our lives are crowded with stuff. We are constantly buying new stuff. We are thinking about making more money for more stuff. All of the stuff takes all of our time and energy. Therefore, our lives are consumed by taking care of the stuff and getting more stuff. We end up missing the real purpose in life which is loving the Lord and others for whom He died.

Either way, greed takes away the life of those who have it. That makes it very important for us to repent of greed and to ask the Lord to give us the proper view of money and material things. After all, we can't take any of it with us when we leave this world. We better make sure, we know the Lord, and we have been faithful to Him.

Tomorrow, I intend to read Proverbs 3-5.
