Keep Your Heart

Many people wonder why they have such problems in life. Of course, there are many sources from which problems arise. However, the main source is our own heart. That is why God inspired Solomon to admonish us to keep our hearts with all diligence. (Proverbs 4:23) I believe this is something any believer can do, and it will make a huge difference in his or her life.

There are several elements that go into keeping our hearts. One aspect is that we must keep our hearts under the control of the Holy Spirit, and not allow our hearts to be controlled by Satan, the world, or the flesh. Without this control our hearts can be very unstable, shifting back and forth from good to evil on a moment's notice. However, when the Spirit controls our hearts, there is stability and focus on the right things.

That leads into the next aspect of keeping our hearts. What are we putting into our hearts through our 5 senses? Anything we put in affects our heart. If we put in the wrong things our hearts become polluted with sinful things. Once they are in there, it can be a long process of cleansing them out, so that we can have a pure heart. Therefore, we must be diligent to keep our hearts pure by only allowing the right things to go in.

Finally, we keep our hearts by guarding that to which we give our hearts. If we allow our hearts to be given over to loving the wrong person, we can turn against the Lord. He is the one who desires all of our love. Therefore, we must keep our hearts faithful to God by loving and trusting Him alone. I know we love people, and we trust people, but our love and trust for everyone else must be completely subordinate to our love and trust for the Lord. Then, we keep our hearts totally faithful to Him.

Tomorrow, I intend to read Proverbs 6-8.
