The Rod, the Branch, and the Spirit
Jesus is the Rod from the stem of Jesse, and the Branch out of His roots, because He came from King David's family. (Isaiah 11:1,2) He was born in the city of David, Bethlehem, to Mary and Joseph, His step-father, who were both descendants of David. That way there was no doubt that this prophecy was true. Then, when Jesus began His ministry, John, the Baptist, baptized Him in the Jordan River to fulfill all righteousness. When He came up out of the water the Spirit descended on Him in the form of a dove. The rest of His life He operated in the power of the Spirit. Therefore, He had wisdom, understanding, counsel, might, knowledge, and the fear of the Lord. What does all of that mean for us? Let me share a little about this.
Jesus was a human being just like us. The only difference was that since God was His Father, He did not have a sin nature, and He did not sin. That is why the Bible emphasizes that He was a descendant of David. His humanity shows us what is possible for us to accomplish in our lives. I believe that Jesus could have sinned in the sense that He had a choice, so He could have given in to temptation. (Hebrews 4:15) However, since He was God, too, and since He had the Holy Spirit, He did not choose to sin. Now, we have both, Jesus and the Spirit to help us in our fight against sin.
Jesus shows us the way, as we pray to Him. The Spirit supplies the wisdom, understanding, counsel, might, knowledge, and the fear of the Lord. Since we have all of these, and Jesus walks with us, we can overcome anything the world, the flesh, and the Devil throw at us. We are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. (Romans 8:37) Therefore, if you are a believer, but you are living a defeated life make sure you talk with Jesus, so He can guide you, and you allow the Spirit to fill you, so you can have all that Jesus had to combat sin and win the victory for us. We will never be perfect like Jesus, but we can obey Him and be victorious.
Tomorrow, I intend to read Isaiah 13-16.
