Lift Up Your Hands in the Sanctuary
God commands us in His Word to lift up our hands in the sanctuary as we bless Him and worship Him. (Psalm 134:2) Many people feel very uncomfortable raising their hands in worship services. Others won't do it, because they we not taught to worship that way. However, we must not ignore the commands of God.
Lifting hands in worship has many meanings and results. When we lift our hands, we are physically reaching out to God, as we reach out to praise Him with our lips and our words. We raise our hand in class to ask a question or to volunteer to answer a question. It shows involvement, and not being passive in our worship. We raise our hands in surrender, and it is very fitting to surrender to the Lord as we bless His name and worship Him. Of course, it can be just a way to present ourselves to God physically and to fully praise Him, body, soul, and spirit.
If you do not make it a practice to lift your hands in the sanctuary and bless the Lord, I want to encourage you to ask God what to do. I believe He will want you to break down the inhibitions and the traditions that bind you, so that you can obey His command and experience full worship. I believe you will find that you have been missing an element of worship that is very fulfilling.
Tomorrow, I intend to read Psalms 136-138.
