A Quiet Soul

It seems there are so many people these days with worried, fearful, unsatisfied souls. They keep trying to find happiness in a party or another type of fun experience. However, that does not bring calm and quiet to our souls. The psalmist was very insightful when he said that he had calmed and quieted his soul like a weaned child with his mother.(Psalm 131:2) I believe this verse shows us two elements of having a quiet soul.

Our souls are quiet and calm when we experience growth as a believer, so that we can feed our selves and begin to do the things that God is teaching us. We have a sense of accomplishment, and we know that we have pleased the Lord. This quiets our soul. It calms the worries and fears. It satisfies us deeply. We have hope, and we know we can continue to grow in the Lord and get stronger and stronger.

Then, the other part of a calm and quiet soul is the child is "with his mother." This weaned child is no longer helpless, but it is good to know that mother is close by, just in case there is a need. None of us have arrived so much that we do not need help from time to time. We must be able to know that the Lord is there for us to have a quiet soul. We must lean on Him for the things He has not already taught us.

When we put those two things together, we have the keys to a quiet soul. It is up to us to trust the Lord and become weaned enough to be on our own, but never stray from Him, so that He is close by when we need His assistance.

Tomorrow, I intend to read Psalms 133-135.
