The Power of God's Word
When we read God's Word and hear it spoken, we think of how it can build us up and teach us. There is also another function for the Word of God. It is powerful to burn away the trash in our lives and to break us down like a hammer when we need it, too.(Jeremiah 23:29) We need to realize both aspects of the power of God's Word in our lives.
The Bible is a wonderful treasure of God's truth. It is a light for us and a lamp. It is our directions for life. However, when we have chosen to go the wrong way and to make wrong decisions, the Bible is there to correct us. This can be a gentle reminder, or it can be a very powerful fire that burns within us until we repent of sin and get ride of the unrighteousness in our lives. It can become a hammer that beats us down until we listen to it, and follow God's will. I believe that is why even some believers do not read God's Word. They are convicted by the Bible. They only want to hear the passages they like, so they pick and choose. They do not simply read the Bible, because they are confronted with the fire of judgment and the hammer of correction.
This is why we all need to read all of the Bible, so it can bring all of its power to bear on our lives, whether we need to be built up or broken down. Listen to God's Word, because if we reject His Word, we are rejecting God Himself.
Tomorrow, I intend to read Jeremiah 26-28.
