Walking with God
As believers, every day should be a walk with God. It is another way of saying that we live our lives with Him. Some people misunderstand this truth, because we have the Spirit living in us once we come to know Christ. This leads some people to think that we can't go anywhere without the Lord or do anything that He is not with us. This is not really true, because we are called to follow Christ, too. He does not follow us, but we are to follow Him. He is in us, but if we go the wrong way, He will not be with us there. We have to return to Him and walk with Him. David says this very well in Psalm 73:23,24. Let's consider what David shows us in that passage.
First of all, David chose to be with the Lord "continually." It was not just a prayer before eating and worship on the Sabbath. He was consciously living His life by having close fellowship and communication with the Lord. That was his plan every day, every step of the way. What is your plan today?
Then, he showed us his orientation to the Lord while he was following close by Him. God was holding his right hand. The right hand was the symbol of strength and power. This shows us that David had given up his own power, and he was holding God's left hand, so that God's mighty right arm could fight for him. How much better is that than fighting for ourselves?
Also, he was living by God's counsel. He was not leaning on his own understanding of life and people. He was receiving God's wisdom and counsel for each situation he encountered in his life. This way David was able to avoid traps and make the right plans for the future, as he allowed the One who knows everything to direct him.
Finally, David was confident in his hope. He knew that "glory" or heaven was his eternal home. He would leave earth where he followed the Lord closely to be in heaven and continue the relationship in an even more intimate manner. He would be able to worship around the throne of God and behold Him in all of His glory.
That all sounds like a great plan for life, doesn't it? David had come to know God's way of living. He did not do it perfectly, but he had God's design in mind. If we do not shoot for the right thing, we will really miss God's way by a mile. I pray that we all will be able to walk with God like this each day.
Tomorrow, I intend to read Psalms 75-77.
