The Fear of God

This week we are having Vacation Bible School at our church. The focus is on II Timothy 1:7 which assures us that God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind. That is very true. However, there is a good fear. The fear of God is good. In fact, He wants us to fear Him, so we will worship Him and follow Him.(Psalm 76:7)

Let me put it this way. You do not want God to be angry with you. He is the most powerful and wise enemy in the universe. You can't beat Him in a fight, and you can't out-smart Him. If He comes after you, you just have to take His punishment. Therefore, the fear of God is important. We must not think that we can neglect God or rebel against Him and get away with it. Instead, we must submit in love and faith, so that we respect, honor, and worship Him in spirit and in truth.

The sad thing is that many people fear other people, and they let that fear keep them from the fear of God. They do what people want, not what God wants. They fear what people will say so much that they keep silent when it comes to telling others about the Lord Jesus. This is an affront to our Lord. It shows Him that we do not love Him fully, and we do not trust Him to take care of us either. We must get the fear in the right place. or we will live life the opposite way than we should.

Tomorrow, I intend to read Psalms 78-80.
