Two Essential Qualities for Leaders

David was an excellent leader for God's people. He was not perfect, but he was a man of integrity and skill.(Psalm 78:72) These two qualities enabled him to shepherd God's people in a very effective way. The same is true for any Christian leader today.

Any good leader must have integrity. People must be able to trust a leader. Also, they must know that he says what he means and means what he says. Integrity is sticking to what is right, even if it brings personal harm. When we read about the life of David we see his integrity over and over. He would not kill God's anointed, even though Saul was trying to kill him. There were times when he failed to tell the truth and to do God's will, but he admitted his sins and asked God and the people to forgive him. That is integrity.

Also, he had skills to lead people. He was a great general who knew how to lead troops in a battle. He knew what it took to work with his staff to do God's will. He was able to lead people to be unified by his words and actions. These skills brought the people of God together, and led them to be a great country.

Any leader today needs these two qualities. The good thing is that they are developed by following the Lord. It is not a case of being born with these qualities. Everyone can have integrity and develop the skills to lead people, if they will depend on the Lord to show them what to do.

Tomorrow, I intend to read Psalms 81-83.
