Wait, I say, on the Lord!

Waiting is difficult for most people, especially for Americans. Our human nature is to charge ahead and do something, even if it is the wrong thing. The Lord's way is just the opposite of this picture. We are commanded to wait on the Lord, before we decide what to do and before we act.(Psalm 27:14)

There is a hidden element to this waiting. The word includes the need to wait with expectation. Simply waiting is unproductive. However, when we wait on the Lord, because we know He can and will show us His way, we are expressing our faith in Him, and it develops our relationship with Him. What if a married couple spends money without communicating with each other, and there is no decision making process, so that they have to agree on the purchases of more expensive items? It is a recipe for disaster, and it indicates a weak relationship between the husband and wife. The same is true with us and the Lord. If we fail to consult with Him and to wait on His response, we will make wrong decisions, and we will be telling the Lord, He does not matter to us.

The great benefit of waiting on the Lord is that it gives us courage and strength for our lives. We can confidently know we are proceeding in God's way, so that He will protect us and provide what we need. It eliminates the fear that comes by acting on our own and dreading the results, if we are wrong. If we want to live without fear of man and other things in life, we will have to wait on the Lord. Our daily unhurried time with Him is our time to wait on the Lord and to hear from Him, even though we can and should seek Him all day long in every situation of life.

Tomorrow, I intend to read Psalms 29-31.
