Remember Lot's Wife
"Remember Lot's wife." That is all the verse says, but it speaks volumes to those who know the story.(Luke 17:32) Lot, his wife, and his daughters, were the only ones to escape the fiery destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. God was merciful to them, but Lot's wife could not focus on the Lord, she could only look back in longing for the things she was having to leave, so God turned her into a pillar of salt. She has been a tragic reminder for all of us since that day.
In Luke 17 Jesus is describing the times before His second coming. He tells them they will be like the days of Noah and the days of Lot. What were those days like? The people of the world were rushing to destruction in Noah's day, but they did not repent. The kept on their course of business as usual until the day of the flood. Lot's days have a little different meaning to me. Lot and his family were believers, but they lived in a terribly evil city, because they were more concerned about financial prosperity than doing God's will. Therefore, they became numb to sin. In the case of Lot's wife, she could not resist looking back, because her life was wrapped up in materialism and consumerism. She did not want to leave her stuff. It meant more to her than being faithful to God. The same is true for many believers today, I am afraid.
Please, don't look at the things of this world, but focus on the Lord. These things will pass away. They are worthless. Eternity stands before us all. Prepare for eternity by living every day in God's will, not in the things of this world. Life will be much better, as God is able to bless you.
Tomorrow, I intend to read Luke 20-22.
