The Spirit Gives Life
If you have eternal life, you received it as a gift from the Holy Spirit. You did not do anything to deserve it or to work for it.(John 6:63) Jesus was very clear on this important truth. However, there are a lot of people who think that they have life because of something they have done. Nothing could be farther from the truth.
Let me explain, a little. Yes, a person has to be willing to come to Christ and believe in Him as the Lord in order to be saved from his or her sins and to have eternal life.(John 5:40) The fact that you came to Him and believed in Him does not save you. The Holy Spirit gives you life, when God sees your faith in Christ. Therefore, you know you have life, not because of what you have done, but because the Holy Spirit has changed your life and done things in your life that can only be explained by His working in you.
Just like Jesus told Nicodemus, we must be born again to be saved. Only the Spirit can give you a brand new life, make you a new creature. You can't do that for yourself. So I ask you, have you seen the changes come? Is there fruit in your life that is only explained by the work of the Holy Spirit? That is what Jesus is saying to us in this part of the gospel of John. Let's take it to heart!
Tomorrow, I intend to read John 8-11.
