A Personal Copy For Each King

God has some very specific commands for the kings who would reign over His people in Deuteronomy 17. One of those commands was an assignment. Each king was to make a hand written copy of the book of the law from the one used by the priests and Levites.(Deuteronomy 17:18,19) That would be a time consuming task, but a very worthwhile project. God had a specific purpose for this assignment. He told the kings to keep this personal copy with them and read it all of their days, so that they would learn to fear the Lord and to observe all of His commands and statutes. In other words, the law became their instruction book for life and for ruling the people. It would be great to have our leaders do the same thing today.

The thing that struck me, too, was that now most believers in America and around the world are able to have a personal copy of all of God's Word. It is not hand copied, but it is complete. It is a privilege to have it, and we should keep it, read it all of our days, and learn to fear Him and obey Him, as well. There are too many unread Bibles. That is why we have so little fear of God and obedience to His commands.

Just think, we have more advantages than any king of Israel ever had. We have a personal copy of all of God's Word, we have the Holy Spirit to teach us and empower us, and we have other believers to encourage us in our walk with Him. We should be more capable of living in God's will than the kings of Israel.

Tomorrow, I intend to read Deuteronomy 18-20.
