Rehoboth
Several years ago I was struck by the account of Isaac and his men digging the wells in the desert.(Genesis 26) The first few times they dug wells, the other herdsmen in the area quarreled with them about the wells, because they wanted the water for themselves. Finally, they dug a well, and there was no contention over the well, so Isaac named it "Rehoboth." I had never known what that means even though there was a church in the area by that name. It means "broad places." The implication is that there was enough room for everyone, so there was no strife. That is a great place to be in life.
I want to take this to the next level. We all need rehoboth in life in many ways. We might call it margin. It means that we don't need to be busy all of the time. We need some space in life. We don't need to be pressed and pulled by the pressures of life all of the time. We need some space to relax. Jesus went off with His disciples often. They went to get away from the crowds and have some time away. Work is a good thing, but rest is needed, too. That is rehoboth. We need to cease striving sometimes, so we can be refreshed. I pray that each of us will find those broad places in our lives. It is a wonderful feeling to know that God has brought us to that place He wants us to be. They are the green pastures and still waters of life. It is in these times we haves our cup filled up by the Lord as we have sweet fellowship with Him.
Tomorrow, I intend to read Genesis 27-28 and Matthew 8:18-34.
