Humble or Not?
We all have a certain amount of pride in our hearts. In fact, our flesh leads us to be very proud of ourselves in many ways. If we simply listen to our human nature, our flesh, we will end up being a very proud person, who is very unwilling to listen to other people or to the Lord. This lack of humility leads to the downfall of many people.
We see this reality in the life of Manasseh and his son, Amon. (II Chronicles 33:23) Amon did not humble himself before the Lord as his father Manasseh had humbled himself. Instead, Amon trespassed more and more. Manasseh sinned in many ways and led Judah away from God, but in the end he humbled himself and did the right things. Amon never humbled himself, so he sinned more and more.
We need to see this contrast and realize that humility is an essential character quality for us, as believers, if we are going to do God's will and be blessed by the Lord. We have to see our pride and put it away. We have to remember that pride goes before a fall into sin, so that we fully submit to God, confessing that we are unworthy of any credit for anything good we have done. God deserves all the credit.
If we fail to take those actions, we will be motivated by pride to trespass. That means we will go where we are not supposed to go. We will do things we are not supposed to do, even though we know they are wrong. We will think we know better than God, and our pride will lead us to sin more and more. This will lead to a miserable life, and destruction in the end.
