Singleness of Heart

There are many of us who are pulled in many different directions every day. It is a constant struggle to stay focused on what we should do. Our minds race from one option to the next, so that we are very unstable. One day we do one thing, and the next day we do the opposite. It is a terrible way to live, and it is very harmful for us.

God wants us to be very stable. He knows that to have that stability we need one very important quality. We need to be single-minded. (II Chronicles 30:12) In the days of King Hezekiah the hand of the Lord was on Judah to give them singleness of heart to obey the command of the king and the leaders at the word of the Lord. This enabled them to be focused on the right things and not be stressed all of the time. That is what we need today.

We don't think about it this way so much in our culture, but we really make most of our decisions based on our heart. Yes, we use our brain to weigh the options, but in the end it is our heart that leads us to decide what we do. If our heart is not right, we will make the wrong decisions. Our hearts must be focused on the Lord and on Him alone. We must not be wishy-washy, but steadfast on doing God's will.

That is why we need to pray for God to bless us with singleness of heart the way He blessed Judah in Hezekiah's time. That way, we can hear the word of the Lord from our leaders and do it without hesitation. We can have a single mind and a single heart, instead of being pulled in many directions. However, we have to cooperate with God on this by being fully committed to Him in love. Then, He can give us singleness of heart.
