Preparing Our Ways Before The Lord

I believe that most people believe that they would really be happy if they could just do whatever they want to do all the time.  Similarly, it seems that most people think  that they would really be successful, if they could just do things the way they think is right. Both groups are just focused on freedom, not answering to anyone but themselves. That is not the road to a successful life, though. God is the only One who is able to direct us in the best ways for our lives, so we need to follow His ways.

King Jotham of Judah knew this principle, and he put it into practice in his reign as king. (II Chronicles 27:6) So Jotham became mighty, because he prepared his ways before the Lord. That is an unusual phrase, but it is filled with meaning, so let's apply ourselves to understand it today. That way we can become mighty, too.

We have to prepare our ways. We can't just let things happen. We can't just do what we want to do on the whim of the moment. If we do things that way, it leads to mistakes and failures. However, if we have the discipline to prepare what we are going to do before we do it, we can be ready to do the right things. Discipline is the key to happiness. It is not being undisciplined like most people believe.

Then, when we are preparing our ways, we need to do it before the Lord. We need to lay out what we need to do, and ask the Lord to show us in His Word and in prayer how to do what we need to do. He will show us, as we come with humble hearts. Then, our ways can be lined up with His ways. When that is a reality, we will see success. Our lives will be mighty in many ways, because God's ways are right and strong.
