The Brunt of Our Infidelity

Infidelity is a terrible sin. When we are unfaithful to our spouse, a friend, or the Lord, it damages our relationship with them. However, it also can have serious consequences for others in our lives. We may not think that is fair, but it is the reality. It ought to make us think twice about being unfaithful or committing any other sin.

When the people listened to the 10 spies who told them they could not take over the land of Canaan, they decided not to believe the Lord and trust Him. They were not faithful to carry out God's commands. (Numbers 14:33 God told them that their sons would be shepherds in the wilderness for forty years and bear the brunt of their infidelity, until their carcasses were consumed in the wilderness. That sounds harsh, but it is very true.

There is never a sin we commit that only affects us. It doesn't matter if no one else knows about it except God. Sin harms us. It causes us to live in ways that affect how we relate to other people. A sinful father is a bad influence on his children, and they are much more likely to follow in his footsteps. If we make bad financial decisions by being unfaithful to God and others, it will have an effect upon our family and others.

Some people, even believers, can wander in the wilderness of life because of their infidelity to God. They will keep wandering until they confess their sins and repent. (I John 1:9) All the while they are wandering, they are not able to do what God had planned for them to do. Therefore, the people they should have helped and ministered to, get neglected. Their help has to come from another person, and it may not be as effective for them. I pray we will all realize who "bears the brunt of our infidelity" and take our sins more seriously.
