Every Congregation Needs a Leader

Whenever we have a group of people that group will need a leader. It could be just a group of five people doing a simple job, but someone has to step up to be the leader, or things will not go as well as they could. However, when it is a large group of people, a leader is even much more important. I think this is especially true for a church, a congregation of God's people.

Moses knew this truth, so he petitioned God to make sure Israel had a new leader before he died. (Numbers 27:15-17) Moses called on the God of the spirits of all flesh to set a man over the congregation who could go out an come in to lead the people out and bring them in, so they would not be like sheep which have no shepherd. Every congregation needs to listen to this plea from Moses, one of the greatest leaders of all time.

Moses called on God to select the right man, because He was the God of the "spirits of all flesh." That means that God knows the spirit of each individual person. He knows his relationship with Him, and He sees how he relates to others. Therefore, God is the one to choose the right leader for every congregation. This is why every church must make the selection of a new leader a matter of much prayer, until they find God's man for the role.

Also, this person must be a man who knows where he is going first. He needs to know when to go out and to come in. He needs to order his life correctly before he can lead a group of people. That is why the Bible says one qualification is that he needs to rule his own family well to show he can lead the church well. Then, as he leads the church in the right way, the people will be taught well and cared for well, because they have the right shepherd.
