Go to the Ant

There are a few workaholics among us, but most of us have the tendency to work only as much as we have to work. Our human nature is to be lazy and to take as much time off as we possibly can. This is a terrible trait to have. It causes us to come up short on what we need when we need it. Laziness makes life very stressful, even though we think it is bringing us comfort and pleasure.

God has given us a great example of how we should all live all the time. (Proverbs 6:6-8) He told us to go look at the ant, if we are prone to be lazy. Take time to observe his ways and to gain wisdom in the process. An ant has no chief, officer, or ruler, but still it prepares its food in the summer and gathers its provision in the harvest. As God said, we would all do well to meditate on the life of an ant.

Ants are not lazy. I have never seen one standing still, unless he was eating something for a short time. They are active and purposeful. On their own initiative they are either looking for food, or they are carrying it away to store it for later. They don't need a leader to coerce them. They have this urgency built into them, and it is a great benefit.

The result of being like an ant is that we work hard at things that matter, things of life and death. We do not squander our time on things that have no long term benefits for us and our family. We save our money, and we lay up things we will need for the future. We do all of this as we anticipate bad times that may come. However, when those times come, we have what we need to survive and to thrive because of our diligence in the past.
