God's Judgment Against Sin
Some people have the mistaken notion that because God is love He will never punish people for sin. Actually, if He did not punish people for sin, that would be the most unloving thing He could do. Since sin separates us from God, the punishment is designed to get us to turn from sin and trust Him, so we have a right relationship with Him.
However, sometimes God has to bring terrible judgment upon a person, a family, or a nation because of blatant sin and their refusal to listen to God's calls for them to return to Him. That is what happened to Judah after Manasseh led them into many serious sins. (II Kings 21:13) He sent word to them by His prophets that He would stretch over Jerusalem the line of Samaria and the plummet of the house of Ahab, and He would wipe Jerusalem clean, just as one wipes a bowl, wiping it and turning it upside down.
God's judgment is fair and it is complete, when it needs to be. He has a plumb line that He uses to access our condition compared to His commands. This is like a carpenter uses to see if a wall is square or not. He uses the same plumb line for everyone, and He uses it exactly right. God never fails to know the facts and act in the right way.
Since God is all -powerful, His judgment is very devastating when it needs to be. He can come in and wipe us out completely, if that is what we deserve. He can turn our life upside down and empty out everything that has accumulated. Then, all we can do is start over. Hopefully, we will start over by repenting and trusting Him fully, or things will only get worse.
