Called and Empowered

We all have to decide what we are going to do with our lives. For those of us who are Christians we should pray and ask God to show us His plan for our life. However, most people, even most Christians, do not really consider that in their decision. Without finding God's will for us, we can waste our life doing unprofitable and meaningless things.

Jehu was called by God to be the king of Israel. It wasn't his choice, but God sent Elisha's servant to let him know what God had said. (II Kings 9:6) Jehu got up and went into the house away from his friends when the prophet's servant came. The prophet's servant poured oil on his head and told him that God had told the prophet that he would be king over the people of the Lord, over Israel. What has God called you to do?

I believe that most Christians think that only pastors, missionaries, and other full-time Christian servants are "called by God" to do a particular job. I don't believe that to be the case, at all. All believers are gifted by the Holy Spirit, and God has a plan for how we are to use our gifts for His kingdom work. We may have a secular job to pay the bills, but our calling from God should be our main priority.

God is so good that He doesn't just call us into His service, but He empowers us. The oil poured on Jehu was a symbol of the Holy Spirit. Kings, prophets, and priests were anointed with oil to show that God had given them the power of the Spirit to accomplish His work. We don't always use oil today, but God empowers us by His Spirit, so we have everything we need to fulfill our calling. I pray all of us will follow God's plan for our lives.
