Caring for the Tabernacle

The Tabernacle was at the very center of life for the sons of Israel as they traveled through the wilderness to Canaan until they came to build the Temple in Jerusalem years later. God resided in the tabernacle as His presence hovered over the Ark of the Covenant. Therefore, it was a great honor and a solemn duty for the Levites to be appointed to care for the Tabernacle all of the time and to pitch their tents about that tent.

God told Moses to make this assignment to the Levites. (Numbers 1:50) Moses was to appoint the Levites over the Tabernacle of Testimony and over all its furnishings and everything that belonged to it. They were appointed to carry the Tabernacle and all of its furnishings whenever the camp moved. They were to care for it and live around it when they camped. I pray we get this picture.

As believers, we do not have to do chores like these, but we have a definite honor and responsibility. Now, our bodies are the temple or tabernacle of the Holy Spirit. Like the Tabernacle in the Old Testament, now God resides in us. He is to be the center of our lives, and all of our focus should be on Him continually.

We are called to take care of our Tabernacle, too. As we stay healthy, we are able to hear from the Lord better, and we are able to do what He directs us to do better. We are to make sure that we are always ready to worship the Lord Jesus, but not with animal sacrifices. We must tend to our hearts and stay in tune with the Lord, following Him everywhere we go.
