Love the Lord
We are commanded to love the Lord. The Bible is very clear on that point. In fact, we are to love the Lord with all our heart, soul, and mind. We are to love Him more than we love anyone or anything else. However, I don't think people really understand what that means.
God used David to spread this message. (Psalm 31:23) He commanded all the godly ones to love the Lord. Then, he reminded us that God protects those who are loyal to Him, but He harshly punishes the arrogant. I believe we have some clues here about how to love the Lord as we should.
Love is not a feeling. We can't be commanded to have a feeling and just start feeling a certain way. Love is a decision and a choice. We choose to love God by putting Him first and being loyal to Him and all His will. When we love the Lord, we keep His commands. That is really loving the Lord.
Being arrogant is the opposite of love. When we are self-centered and arrogant, we focus on ourselves, and we do what we want to do, not what the Lord or others want. Therefore, God has to punish us harshly enough to get our attention and turn us to listen to Him. So, we can see how much we are loving the Lord by how mush we are doing His will, not our own will.
