Never Disciplined
Being disciplined is a very good thing. That includes disciplining ourselves and being disciplined by someone else. Being disciplined is the process of learning how and when to do the right thing. We should all want to do the right thing, so that means being disciplined.
David's son Adonijah decided to proclaim himself as king over Israel when David was very old, and he had not designated who was to take his place. (I Kings 1:6) The Bible tells us that his father, King David, had never disciplined him at any time, even by asking him, "Why are you doing that?" Adonijah had been born next after Absalom, and he was very handsome. I believe this is a key to show us why he acted as he did.
Many people hate the idea of being disciplined. They think the happiest way to live is to do whatever they want to do, whenever they want to do it. Therefore, they do not feel they need discipline. That leads to a very unproductive and chaotic life that is not fulfilling and successful. That is why Adonijah thought and acted as he did.
Instead, the Proverbs tell us that if we love our children we will discipline them. Also, Hebrews affirms that God chastens, or disciplines, His children out of love. Also, Proverbs tells us to discipline ourselves as ants do, even without having to have a leader, so we will do what leads us to have what we need. All of these things should show all of us to love discipline and to want to discipline ourselves and to be disciplined all of the time.
