Work Six Days, Rest and Worship One Day

God has rhythms for our lives. Days last 24 hours, and a major part of that time is darkness. Therefore, we have time to work and to sleep. Weeks have 7 days. God commanded us, as human beings, to work 6 days of the week. Then, as He took a break after creating the world in 6 days, we are to take a break each week. One day is to be set aside from our regular work, so that we have rest for our mind, and we can focus on the Lord. (Leviticus 23:3) Let's think about this command of God and how it is for our benefit.

Many people do not understand this holy rhythm of life. They either work too much, or they do not work enough. Work is not a punishment. It is good for us. God created us to work and to be productive in life. It is His plan for us to mange all of the resources of this world and of our lives, which He owns and has lent to us. To be good stewards means that we work hard and invest our time, talents, and money to accomplish all that is worthwhile. This is life. However, all work and no rest is not right either. Each week we need a day of rest. We need to disconnect from the usual and concentrate on physical rest and spiritual renewal. This includes getting together with other believers to worship the Lord and learn His Word. When we are faithful to work and rest as God has commanded, we are healthier and our lives have the balance we need to enjoy life as God designed it. Let's all remember that we don't own anything. The earth is the Lord's and all that is in it. He designed it all, and He has given us the instructions for our part in managing all His great gifts. Let's take His instructions to heart and see if He doesn't bless us very well.
