What's Your Assignment?

The book of Numbers has a good name because it starts off with God commanding Moses to number the tribes. This numbering or census was done, so each tribe would know where to camp and what order in which to march when the people moved. Then, the Levites were numbered because they were to help the priests with all of the work in the tabernacle and carrying all of it when they moved. It was a huge undertaking to move over 2 million people and the tabernacle through the wilderness for 40 years. God told Moses just what work to assign to each tribe and family, so that everyone knew their assignment and did it well. (Numbers 4:49) This is so interesting, since it shows us God's way of delegating the work for them, and it gives us an insight into what we are to do today.

Believers are not Levites, but God has assigned us all jobs. For the church to effectively do the work of the Lord, each of us must receive our assignments from God and carry them out well. It seems that many believers do not grasp this truth. God has established His church to do His work in this time. Our task is to take the gospel of the kingdom to the entire world. God has work for each of us to do in this great undertaking. No one is left out. When we all do our work and carry our load, the work gets done, and it is not too much of a burden for any of us. However, in many churches we are told that 20% of the members do 80% of the ministry. That places a heavy burden on the 20% that God never intended. We need to be diligent to find our assignment and do it well. God will show us what He has gifted us to do, if we seek His will. Then as we carry our load, we will see our neighborhoods, our state, our nation, and our world come to Christ.
