Turning the World Upside Down

The church grew very quickly when it was young. In fact the critics were the ones who told us how effective the Christians were at bringing people out of their idolatry and their dead religions to have a relationship with Jesus Christ, the Risen Lord. The Jewish leaders proclaimed that the believers had filled Jerusalem with their teaching. Then, when Paul went from city to city, there were riots when the people got upset by the changes they were seeing. In Thessalonica the mob dragged some of the believers out shouting that the ones who had turned the world upside down had come there, too. (Acts 17:6) That was supposed to be a criticism, but it was really a great compliment to the power of God.

Think about our world today. We need for our world to be turned upside down. Things are so opposite of how God designed them to be. People worship the creation, instead of the Creator. They are focusing on their temporary possessions here in this world, instead of eternity. Many people are confused about what life is all about. Believers need the power of God to work in us today to turn this world upside down again, as Paul and the believers did then. It is entirely possible, but it depends on us. Paul had no modern means of spreading the gospel. He had to go from place to place and speak to people directly or write letters that were delivered by another person. There was no printing presses, telephones, computers, television, radios, or Internet, yet God used them to bring great change to the world. Now, we have every advantage, but it is up to us to have the faith and commitment of the first believers, so God can work in us and through us to do His will. If we will do that, we can see the world turned upside down today.
