Oh Sinful Nation

So, today we start reading through the Prophets of the Old Testament. It will take us a while to get to the New Testament. Until then, we will read many condemnations of sins and calls to repentance. Each year it strikes me as being so relevant to where America is today. I know we are not a theocracy like Israel was under the Old Covenant. However, since we were founded upon Judeo-Christian values, and many of our founders were true believers, I know God will hold us accountable even more than other countries. We truly are a sinful nation today. (Isaiah 1:4) That was Isaiah's description of Israel in his day. We need to listen carefully to how he described God's people, so we can turn away from what they did.

The whole country was "weighed down with iniquity." That is the force of sins upon a nation. They weigh us down, instead of us being lifted up. We are a brood of evildoers. I know that does not describe all of us, but it does describe a great majority of our people. We are depraved children, so wrapped up in our sins that we do not see the right way to go. America has willfully abandoned the Lord in our public  institutions, such as public schools. We have gone even further. We have despised the Holy One. We ridicule the Lord, instead of humbly trusting Him. We have turned our backs on Him. Yes, we know He must be there, but we do not want to think about Him, at all. All of this is a recipe for disaster. When Judah got to this point God destroyed their country. I wonder what will happen to America?

Tomorrow, I intend to read Isaiah 2-4.
