The Site of the Lord's Temple
Solomon built the temple of the Lord on Mount Moriah. That was a special place, because it was where his father, David, had offered the sacrifice on the threshing floor of Ornan to stop the plague God had sent on Israel because of his sin of taking the census. (II Chronicles 3:1) God had appeared to David there before the sacrifice was made, so it was a sacred place. Solomon desired for God's presence to dwell in this temple. That is what God wanted, too. However, there was another event that made this place very fitting, whether Solomon was thinking about it or not.
Long before the building of the temple, Abraham was commanded by God to offer the son of the covenant, Isaac, as a sacrifice to the Lord. Because of Abraham's great faith, he obeyed God completely, taking his son to the land of Moriah. It was on that mount that the Lord provided the ram to be sacrificed, instead of Isaac. Abraham had passed the test of his faith. God had been able to teach Him that the Lord always provides.(Genesis 22) This truly was a sacred place because God met Abraham there.
Now, each of us as believers are temples of the Holy Spirit. We have God's presence with us all of the time. What a huge blessing! We do not have to travel to a temple. We can meet with God wherever we are, and He is there to provide for us. He is there to forgive or to bring comfort. What a wonderful God we serve!
Tomorrow, I intend to read II Chronicles 5-7.
