The Promise of a Special Son
Samson's mother was barren, until the Angel of the Lord appeared to her and announced that she would have a son. That was a great blessing for any Jewish woman. However, in this case it was an even greater blessing. The promised son would become the leader who would deliver Israel from the oppression of the Philistines, their main enemy. There was just one condition. The son was to be a Nazarite to the Lord from birth. That meant he had to be dedicated to the Lord in a special way. His mother could not eat or drink anything made from grapes, and she had to make sure that he did not do that either, once he was born. Also, his hair was never to be cut. (Judges 13:5) If he would be faithful to do these things, the Lord would use him greatly. I think there is a lesson in this for all parents.
Every child is a blessing from the Lord. As parents, once we know we will have a child, we need to prepare our hearts to be the best parents we can be. This includes making sure we live holy lives, being separated from the things of the world and being set apart to the Lord fully. Then, when the child comes, we should make sure that we fully dedicate the child to the Lord, whether we do it at a church service or in our home. The child should be made known that we have done this, and we should begin to teach the child the things of the Lord from the youngest age. In this way the child has every opportunity to be saved at an early age and to be used by God to do great things. Every child is special to the Lord, too. He wants all of them to be saved and to serve Him. He has a great plan for their lives, if they will just be guided to finding Him and finding His plan.
Tomorrow, I intend to read Judges 14-16.
