Keep in Step with the Spirit

Once we come to know Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior, and we receive the Holy Spirit, we are to be guided by the Spirit and empowered by Him. We must not depend on the flesh, but on the Spirit. Then, the challenge is to keep in step with the Spirit. (Galatians 5:25) I like that translation here by the English Standard Version. What exactly does that mean for us? It is vital that we realize how to keep in step with the Spirit.

When we walk with another person, it is a challenge. We have to walk at the same speed. We must stop when the stop and turn in the direction they turn. It takes concentration and a certain amount of coordination, as well as skill. I believe the same things are true when we keep in step with the Holy Spirit. We must not get ahead of Him or lag behind. That requires us to be very focused on listening to Him and staying close to Him every day. As we read the Bible, He will show us the meaning, and He will direct us when to turn to the right or the left. One of the most important things He tells us is to stop. If we do not heed that warning, we can really get into trouble. All in all, it takes becoming very familiar with His voice and His movements, so we can be in coordination with Him. That is the very essence of having a relationship with Him, which is what it is all about.

Tomorrow, I intend to read Ephesians 1-3.
