What God Expects Us to Do
Being a Christian is not rocket science. In fact, once we know the character of God, which we can easily see by reading the accounts of Christ in the Gospels, we can know most of what God expects us to do. However, the Bible is full of lists and admonitions of the things God is looking for from His children. The prophet Zechariah records a good list for us in his book. (Zechariah 8:16,17) Just think of the virtue of these simple things.
God expects us to speak the truth. God is the God of truth. He created truth for us. Jesus is "the truth." The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of truth. Therefore, believers are to speak only the truth, never falsehoods or deception. That makes life so much better for everyone.
God is looking for us to make judgments that are true and make for peace. When we make decisions, they should always be based on God's truth, not on our opinions. When we do that, they will lead to peace between people, because God loves for us to be peacemakers whenever possible.
We must not devise evil against one another. God is love, so we are to love. It is unthinkable that we should plot evil against another person. God expects us to build up other people, not tear them down.
Finally, we are not to love any false oaths. God expects us to be committed to His Word and not to false statements that lead us and others away from trusting God. An oath is something we swear to uphold. We are not to uphold anything except the things of the Lord and the things taught in the Word of God.
When we do the right things, God is pleased, and our culture is enhanced by those things. When we do what God hates, we bring His anger upon us and our society. That is why we should do what God expects us to do.
Tomorrow, I intend to read Zechariah 9-11.
