Barzillai, David's Loyal Supporter
When Absalom rebelled against David and set himself up as king, David fled from Jerusalem to Mahanaim. He took his family and his mighty men with him. The Lord used an 80 year old supporter of David to supply the food that was needed during their stay outside of Jerusalem. His name was Barzillai. When David returned home, he invited Barzillai to go with him and live in his house. Barzillai declined the offer. David kissed him, blessed him, and allowed him to return to his home in peace.(II Samuel 19:32.39) What a picture of loyal support for King David.
Barzillai did not give up when he got older. He remained ready to do what he could for his friend David. When he saw the need for food, he met it out of his own financial resources. He did not expect favors in return. He just wanted to help in any way he could. He did not want his support of David to bring him recognition or honor. He humbly helped David, even though he was a man of great wealth. I believe that Barzillai is a great example of how we should be loyal and support the friends and leaders we love. David was a great king, but he could not have accomplished what he did without the support of people like Barzillai. He knew that, and that is why he kissed his friend and blessed him before they parted. We need to show our appreciation to our friends and supporters while we can.
Tomorrow, I intend to read II Samuel 21-24.
