Cleansed and Set Free
Leprosy was a terrible disease in Bible times. There was no cure, and anyone pronounced unclean from leprosy was driven out of their home and city to live alone or with other lepers away from the regular population. It was a disease that gradually killed the person, and it led to a very lonely existence. Therefore, it was a joyous occasion when a leper was pronounced clean. The priest had to examine the person and make the pronouncement. Then, an offering was given in which they used 2 birds. One was killed, so the live bird could be dipped in the blood and set free in the open field, some of the blood being sprinkled on the cleansed person, too. (Leviticus 14:7) This is a wonderful picture of our salvation experience today.
Sin makes us unclean, and it separates us from God. It harms our relationships with other people, as well. However, when we trust Christ, we are cleansed from our sins. Christ pronounces us clean once and for all, because His blood has atoned for our sins, and He applies it to us for our cleansing. Then, we are set free from sin to have a close relationship with God forever, and to have close relationships with others, especially those who know the Lord, too. What a blessing to be cleansed and set free!
Tomorrow, I intend to read Leviticus 15-18.
