The Nature of Scripture

The Bible is not like any other book ever written by men, because the real Author is the Holy Spirit. (II Peter 1:20,21) Peter gave us special insight into the nature of the Bible or Scripture. The word Scripture means "writings." It refers to all that has been written down by the inspiration of God. That makes the 66 books of the Bible very different from human books. Let's see what God told Peter to tell us.

No prophecy of Scripture is a matter of human interpretation. A prophecy is not just something written or spoken about the future. It is anything "spoken forth" from God. Therefore, when a man spoke or wrote what God told him, there is only one correct interpretation, which is what God meant. Therefore, when we read and study the Bible, we are seeking the meaning God gave to us by moving those men by the Holy Spirit to write His words, not what they wanted to write. God used their vocabulary, culture, and personality, as He led them, but the end result was the written Word of God. That is why we can be confident that the Bible does not contain God's Word, but the Bible is the Word of God. Every word is significant and it conveys the truth of God as we understand it correctly and find His meaning. The Holy Spirit is also there for all believers, to bring the Scripture to light, so we can know what God meant, and there is no question about the interpretation. The main challenge is believing it and applying it in our lives.

Tomorrow, I intend to read II Peter 3 and I John 1-2.
