Living Water for the Thirsty
When Jesus was at one of the feasts in Jerusalem, He stood up on the last day of the feast to make a wonderful appeal to those in the crowd. On that day, one of the priests would offer an oblation, a liquid sacrifice, by pouring out water. At that time, Jesus cried out for all to hear, that if they were thirsty, they should come to Him and drink. He was referring to believing in Him as the Lord of all. If they would do that, not only would their thirst be quenched, but out of their innermost being would flow rivers of "living water." (John 3:37-38) This promise still holds true for anyone today, the same as it did for those at the feast.
Jesus is the "Living Water." He forgives our sins, when we truly trust Him in repentance and faith in Him as Lord. He quenches our spiritual thirst, as He told the woman at the well in John 4. However, He also comes to live in us in the person of the Holy Spirit. The Spirit is a constant spring of living water in us that flows out of us to show other people that Jesus is Lord. Also, since we have Jesus, we can show others how to know Him and receive the living water themselves. In that way, when we come to Him, our thirst is quenched, and there is the potential for many others to have their thirst quenched by Jesus also. May we all be the source of living water for those around us.
Tomorrow, I intend to read John 8-11.
