The Lord has Bared His Holy Arm
I love the word pictures of the Bible. They give us such a great vision of so many things. Here Isaiah uses a very thought provoking picture of God baring His holy arm. (Isaiah 52:10) When I read that I can see this very muscular man pulling up his sleeve to reveal his huge biceps. It is a picture of great strength with which we can all relate. The fact that it is applied to God is what we must meditate upon to get the meaning.
God had bared His holy arm to punish Israel for their sins by taking them into exile. They may not have considered the power of God before that as they should have, but after seeing the destruction of Jerusalem and being taken to Babylon, they did not doubt His strength. Then, they saw it again when God sent the Medes and the Persians to defeat the kingdom of Babylon, so that King Cyrus allowed them to return to their homeland. God had engineered the salvation of His people by His holy arm. He did not do this just so they could see Him in power, but so the whole earth could see His bared arm and know that He was Lord of all. I pray that we all would ask God to bare His holy arm again and show our world that salvation only comes through Jesus Christ. He is the only hope for the world today.
Tomorrow, I intend to read Isaiah 53-56.
